Once temperature is under control, everything else people mean by “comfort” comes down to humidity, particulates and fresh air.

Whole-house air cleaners sit in the ductwork and filter everything the system moves, which is a fundamentally different job from the one-inch filter at the return grille. That filter exists to protect the blower. A proper media cabinet or electronic cleaner protects you.

Humidity runs both directions here. Summers are humid enough that an oversized air conditioner leaves a house cold and damp; winters are dry enough to crack furniture and irritate sinuses. Dehumidifiers and humidifiers address the two ends of that.

UV lamps have one job they do well: keeping the evaporator coil and drain pan free of biological growth. A fouled wet coil smells and restricts airflow, and the lamp prevents both. Ventilators bring controlled outside air into tightly built houses without opening a window.

Common questions

Will an air cleaner help my allergies?

It can help meaningfully with airborne particulates — dust, pollen, dander. It will not do much about allergens that live in carpet and bedding. And if leaking return ducts are pulling crawlspace air into the system, that air bypasses the filter entirely, so the ductwork gets fixed first.

Do I need a humidifier and a dehumidifier?

In this climate, a fair number of homes benefit from both — they run in different seasons. Start with whichever complaint you have.
