Single-stage cooling. The dependable, straightforward choice.
Cooling equipment is graded by efficiency and by how precisely it can modulate. Both matter, but not equally for every house.
Single-stage equipment is either fully on or fully off. It is the cheapest to buy and perfectly adequate in a well-built, correctly ducted house. Two-stage runs at a lower output most of the time, which means longer, gentler cycles and noticeably better humidity control. Variable-speed modulates continuously and is the quietest and most comfortable, at a higher price.
The efficiency rating — SEER2 — tells you how much cooling you get per unit of electricity under standard conditions. Higher is better and costs more up front, so the right choice depends on how long you will own the house and how hard you run the system.
All of this depends on equipment that is the right size and ductwork that can carry the air, which is why we measure first.

Whichever you choose, we size it by load calculation and check the ductwork first.
The equipment matters less than how it is sized and installed, and that part is our responsibility.

It comes down to payback. Higher efficiency costs more up front and returns it over years of running. If you plan to stay twenty years, buying up usually makes sense. If you expect to sell in three, the extra cost will not come back.
For humidity and quiet, yes — it runs long gentle cycles instead of blasting and stopping. For pure running cost, the gap is narrower. If your main complaint is that the house feels clammy, it is the right answer.
