An evaporator coil is cold and wet every time the air conditioning runs. Those are ideal conditions for biological growth, and that is where a UV lamp earns its keep.

Mounted to shine on the coil and drain pan, the lamp prevents the mold and biofilm that otherwise accumulate there. That matters for two practical reasons: a fouled coil restricts airflow and costs efficiency, and it is the source of the musty smell that appears when the system starts up.

We want to be clear about the limits. A coil lamp is very good at keeping the coil clean. Broader claims about sterilizing the air as it rushes past at duct velocity deserve some skepticism, because the contact time is too short. It is worth buying for what it demonstrably does.
