A ductless system puts a small indoor unit directly in the room it serves, connected to an outdoor unit by a pair of small refrigerant lines through a three-inch hole in the wall.
That removes the single biggest obstacle to conditioning an awkward space: there is no ductwork to run. For an addition, a converted garage, a sunroom, a finished attic or a shop, it is very often both cheaper and better than extending an already marginal duct system.
Extending existing ducts to serve a new room is the mistake we are most often called to fix. It usually makes the new room adequate and every other room slightly worse, because the original system was never sized for the extra load.
Multi-zone versions run several indoor units from one outdoor unit, each with its own control — which is a strong answer for a whole house with no ductwork at all.
